Fall Family Photography in Ottawa: What to Wear & Where to Go

Fall is, hands down, the most requested season for family photography in Ottawa — and it books up quickly. Here's how to plan yours.

    Timing it for peak colour

Ottawa's fall colours typically peak in the last two to three weeks of September into early October, though it shifts slightly year to year depending on weather. I'd recommend reaching out a few weeks ahead of when you want to shoot, since fall weekends fill up fast across every family photographer's calendar — not just mine.

    Coordinating outfits without "matching"

The fall photos that age the best usually aren't fully matching outfits — they're coordinated. Pick two or three colours from a warm autumn palette (rust, mustard, deep green, cream, navy) and let each family member wear a different combination, rather than everyone in the exact same shirt. It reads as far more natural in photos.

Layer for comfort, not just looks

Fall mornings and evenings in Ottawa can be genuinely cold. Bring layers you can remove for the actual photos but throw on between setups — nobody poses well if they're shivering.

    Best time of day

Golden hour (roughly the last hour before sunset) is especially beautiful in fall, when the low light filters through coloured leaves. Morning sessions work well too, particularly if we're using a location with strong tree cover for shade.

    Booking early matters

Because fall is the busiest season for outdoor family photography here, I'd suggest booking 3–4 weeks ahead if you want a specific weekend or peak-colour timing. Family & Portrait sessions start at $350 — reach out to check fall availability, or browse past family sessions for inspiration.
